A list of kosher food
But who says it's kosher?

By now you must feel entitled to a list of kosher foods.

You can define kosher.
You can name kosher species.
You know what keeps them kosher.
You can prepare them correctly.

You want to move on to products, brands and outlets.
Developing a list is the next logical step, right?

Well yes, but...no comprehensive list exists.

There is no good-hearted soul – not even me! -
who is going to compile one.
(It would be impossibly huge anyway.)

However, there is something that will work.
Find out who are the organizations
that certify that foods are kosher.
(We'll show you how.)
They will provide you with your list,
as complete a list as you could want.

As an example, here is a list of kosher food
certified by one inspection agency.

So, why is it that "who says it's kosher?" comes next.

Why Does "Who" Matter?

The key is to understand that if something
began life kosher...
it may not remain kosher.

Think of your children. When they go out alone
you ask them -
Where will you be?
Who will you be with?

If you can't get the answers to those questions...
something might not be kosher!

Equally so is it with food.
Before you can eat it you have to know -
where has it been? -
what was it mixed with?

Unless you attend personally...
at the farm,
the slaughterhouse,
the factory,
and the kitchen

for every single food you consume...
you will need to rely on someone else who does go there.

That someone is the who, who says it's kosher.

Why Do We Need Them?

You may read a label and believe -
"everything in this is kosher" or

you might ask, "What could possibly
be not kosher about that?" or

you could assume, " This is all-natural -
so it must be kosher"... but before you do...

let's see what it takes for a product to be certified kosher.

Which Are The Reliable Certifications?

Good question. There are few laws
protecting kosher consumers.
Remember that before trusting
any list of kosher food
or any certification agency.

There are hundreds of such agencies
with widely differing standards.

Here is an article on how to compare certifications.

Each certification agency has
a symbol which acts as a trademark.
A kosher symbol might be displayed by a business
or on a package. Its presence indicates supervision
by that agency.

Here is How to Compile the List

Now here is where we get to that
list of kosher foods that I promised.

Granted you have to put it together yourself
but it's very easy.
Now that you know who to trust -
just get the list from each certification agency!

They will all be pleased to provide it.

The more people who ask for their list...
the more companies will want to be on it.

The longer the list of kosher food...
the more people will ask for it and...
the more food will be kosher!

It's a win win win -
consumers
companies
certifiers.

To actually acquire the products on your list
first look for the kosher symbol on the label (or business).
Make sure the certifier is reliable.

How to read a kosher food label includes knowledge
of certification agencies and much more.

Buyers and Sellers

Selling or buying, the information in this section is one of your
starting points. Your first task is to understand the function of
the kosher certification agencies and how to make use of them.

Food sellers, or potential sellers, will want to know
how to enter the kosher food market.

Buyers at this point are asking "where do I find it?"

The good news for both is...
there is a lot of opportunity.
