Passover Observance
Passover 2008 begins before sunset on April 19th, but Passover observance begins a long time before that.
( For the dates of passover click here.)
This section of our website will give you the information that you need about Passover or the resources to find it. Click on the link for any subcategory to learn more. We'll begin with the basics to explain why Passover observance has its beginnings well in advance of the actual holiday. (Today is a good day to start... but yesterday might have been better!)By the way, although it may go without saying, all the aspects of keeping kosher anytime also apply on Passover.
Passover observance however, raises the stakes of keeping kosher in two ways: 1) Some foods which are permitted the rest of the year are forbidden on Passover. 2) Not only is consumption of these items not allowed - neither is use, possession or ownership!
How Our Passover Section is Organized
Am I scaring you? Relax! Jews have been doing this for millenia and it has never been easier. Besides, you know you're in the right place for information! Our Passover section is organized in a way that parallels the rest of the site.
1) Passover observance begins with knowing what things are prohibited on Passover.
2) Next we advise on how to prepare your home for Passover.
3) Then you will need to know how to handle forbidden materials.
4) The all-encompassing nature of the prohibitions calls for more than the usual awareness. Some things you might not ordinarily consider are:
- Make-up and toiletries.
- Pet food.
- Medication.
Is there something I've left out? Suggest a topic for our newsletter, and
subscribe to Hey! It's Kosher!
5) It's out of sequence I know, but you need information for after Passover ends. Did I forget to tell you that what you do now can have an impact after the holiday ends. I did forget? I'm sorry
( but read After Passsover, please).
6) Back to the preparations. We'll show you how to find the foods you will need by
using a Passover haggada to plan for the seder meal.
7) To shop for those products use our
Buy Kosher Form
and we'll help you. It's in the Where Do I Find It section. The button for it is to your left on the site navigation bar. Watch for updates to that section in the winter and spring.
You can also get all the updates to the entire site sent to you as they are created. Just use the RSS feed, on your left as well. It's super-convenient, secure and free!
8) Why do we do all this? It's in the Torah of course. As well,
the history of Passover
itself suggests some reasons for Passover observance. If this is your first visit to our website, I invite you to scan the topics you see on the navigation bar. They are all about keeping kosher anytime but are true on Passover as well.
