Why Eat Kosher?

Why eat kosher, when discussed on the-definition-of-kosher.com
is hardly a difficult question to answer! Kosher is defined as
food which is permitted to Jewish people by Biblical law.
So the simple answer is "because the Torah (Bible) commands it".

Who Invented Kosher?

The word kosher does not exist outside of the Torah.
Take a look at the many facets of keeping kosher throughout
this website. All of the laws mentioned are in the Torah or
derived from it. There is simply no other logic that unifies them all.

The Torah is a Divine gift to the Jewish people.
Whether you can accept that or not, the Torah
is the only true justification for keeping kosher.

Kosher is unique.

Other Questions. Other Answers

The answer I have provided is an accurate one. In fact
it's the only one. Still, many people keep kosher
for other reasons. Unlike the reason I have given however,
all of them are purely subjective and none are universal.

It may be that if you want a different answer we need to ask
the question differently, so here are two restatements of it.
Perhaps one of them satisfies the true intent of your question.

1) Why does the Torah include kosher laws?
In other words, our reason is the Torah.
Now, what are the Torah's reasons?
That's a version of the question
'why eat kosher?' that we can answer more fully.

2) What are the benefits of keeping kosher?
This question is for those of us who have not yet
achieved the ideal of keeping kosher because of
its Divine Source. Are there other benefits?

Facts and Opinions

I have tried to achieve a specific purpose with this article.
I have tied the question "Why eat kosher?" to the definition
of kosher. This is to demonstrate that the answer is
a matter of logic - not dogma or opinion. Understanding
this will make the whole subject easier to absorb.
